Surname in Europe: The genuine European form is ERENTZ (Cyrillic ЭРЕНЦЪ), Americanized to "Erenz" (real R, the -tz trimmed to -z). Parish records also show unstable spellings Ernest / Erentz / Ernst, with the earliest 1895 record indexing him as Ernest (ЭРНЕСТЪ). Older "shape-misread" and "Berndt" theories are disproven by the actual records.

Birthplace reassessment (important): Two contemporaneous European birth records give Joseph's legal domicile as gmina Radogoszcz, Łódź district (the 1895 act reads clearly ЛОДЗИНСКАГО = Łódź; a 1899 act says Łowicz, a likely clerk variance or misread). Legal domicile usually equals the family-origin commune. So the US petition "Luck / Lutsk" is very likely a mishearing of Łowicz/Łódź (Ловицъ misread as Луцкъ). The family are Congress-Poland Germans of the Łódź/Żyrardów textile region, not Volhynian Germans. Recommended parish for his origin: Łódź Św. Trójcy (Holy Trinity) Ev.-Augsburg.

Family lore: Craig's grandmother Martha (Erenz) Inglehart told that Joseph (or his father) hid from the Czar's soldiers in a priest's robes. Russian draft age was 21 (~1894), which fits the ~1894 to 1895 move into Żyrardów (disappear into a textile town), the 1900 emigration, and the naturalization renouncing the Czar. It plausibly also explains the unstable surname. It does not explain the missing 1873 birth record (that is a transcription coverage gap, see section 4).

Why earlier searches failed: searching "Anna Walter(s)" never matched. Her true name was Walta, and Joseph appeared as Ernest/Erentz. Both are now known.

Walta origins: The Walta family belonged to Łódź Św. Trójcy Ev.-Aug. parish; a Marya Walta married Josef Engel there in 1894, likely Anna's sister. Anna's parents remain unknown. One candidate was examined and set aside: a Zelów Anna Walta (akt 17/1878), daughter of Maciej (Matthias) Walta and Elżbieta née Stránek. Pros: our Anna is Anna Elżbieta, a classic mother-namesake. Cons: birth year off by ~4 years, and the Zelów family was Evangelical-Reformed (Czech Calvinist colony), while our family was Ev.-Augsburg (Lutheran). Not confirmed. This is Anna's line and does not give Joseph's parents.

3. The first family and children

Family unit F0137 (Józef x Anna). Five children are recorded; three are anchored by European birth records in the Wiskitki Ev.-Aug. parish, Żyrardów:

  1. Aleksandra Olga - b. ~8/20 Oct 1895, Żyrardów (akt 210/1895). Gramps I0001. Earliest child, so the marriage predates late 1895. Fate unresolved; not on Joseph's 1908 US naturalization, so likely died young (in Poland before 1900, or in the US 1900 to 1908).
  2. Emil Adolf - b. ~Jan 1897, Żyrardów (akt 1/1897). This is the record that broke the case open, confirming Józef Julian Erentz and Anna's maiden name Walta. Godparent/witness August Stein.
  3. Lucjan Edward ("Edward J" in the US) - b. 1899, Żyrardów (akt 128/1899). Father's age 25 confirms b~1873/74; mother's age 25.
  4. August - Gramps I583643097.
  5. A fifth child is recorded in the family.

Joseph's 1908 US naturalization named only two sons: Emil and Edward, which is the main evidence that the daughters/others did not survive to emigrate.

4. The search for Joseph's parents (status: open)

The goal and the one record that answers it: A birth record names only the child's parents, not the grandparents. So the three children's birth acts confirm Joseph and Anna but do not name Joseph's parents. Joseph's parents will come from Joseph and Anna's marriage record (the groom clause "сынъ..." = "son of ... and ..."), or from a US death/vital record.

  1. Marriage ~1893 to 1894 via the bride (clean spelling Walta) at Łódź Św. Trójcy Ev.-Aug. If the index is blank, browse the marriage scans directly (Metryki / Szukaj w Archiwach / FamilySearch / GenBaza); records exist even when Geneteka has not indexed them.
  2. When searching Joseph's own 1873 birth, look for Józef ERNST/ERNEST (the source-form surname), not "Erenz", among the Józefs already found.
  3. Fallback: the 1955 Milwaukee, WI death certificate should name his parents (informant-reported), plus the church/cemetery burial record in Milwaukee.
